House of Representatives Passes Bill to Strengthen Federal Road Safety Corps

The Nigerian House of Representatives has advanced a bill aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Sponsored by Representatives Abiodun Derin Adesida and Olaide Lateef Muhammed, the legislation proposes key amendments to the FRSC Act, 2007.

The bill seeks to establish an FRSC Special Armed Squad, provide enhanced benefits for Deputy Corp Marshal, and grant the corps exclusive responsibility for road traffic administration, crash prevention, and traffic regulation. Additionally, it authorizes the FRSC to clear public road obstructions and mandates public education on safe road usage.

Separately, Representative Garba Ibrahim Muhammad’s motion urging the FRSC to adopt technological innovations gained approval. The motion recommends leveraging technologies such as automated enforcement systems and data analytics to improve road safety.

The motion tasks the FRSC with assessing the effectiveness of these technologies in reducing traffic violations and improving road safety.

The bill and motion demonstrate the House’s commitment to improving road safety and efficiency in Nigeria.
